Phoebe made her acting debut in the 1982 film Paradise co-starring Willie Aames and Tuvia Tavi. Being a talented singer, Cates also happened to have sang the title song for the film.
It was also in 1982 that Cates made her most famous appearance as Linda Barrett in Fast Times At Ridgemont High. She co-starred with Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Ray Walston, Robert Romanus, Vincent Schiavelli, Amanda Wyss, and Forest Whitaker. Although she was not the main star of the film, Phoebe was the center of the scene many consider the most sexiest scene in movie history to date when she drops her bikini top in slow motion as she was walking across a diving board to jump into a swimming pool.
